Arriving in Singapore

To enter Singapore, foreign visitors must meet the following immigration requirements:

i. Passport Validity

  • Have minimum 6-month passport validity if you are not a Singapore passport holder

ii. Visa

  • Short-Term visitors holding a passport or travel document from a visa-required country/region must apply for a Visa
  • Visa-required visitors can use the Visa-Free Transit Facility for stay of less than 96 hours in Singapore, if eligible

iii. SG Arrival Card (SGAC)

  • All visitors are required to submit the SG Arrival Card within three (3) days (including the day of arrival) before arriving in Singapore

Getting around Singapore

It is very convenient to get around Singapore via various modes of transport. Commonly available are the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), buses and taxi.

Typical flag down fare for taxi in Singapore is around $4.40-$5.00 and may be subjected to a variety of surcharges. For MRT and bus travel, you may want to consider purchasing a Singapore Tourist Pass.

Taxi Public buses MRT

Get a taxi by:

  • Hailing one along the road
  • Queuing at a taxi stand
  • Making a telephone booking
  • All taxis are metered; charge extra for late night trips and no tips are expected. Cash is preferred and there is a small fee for card payment.
  • Using a mobile app (Grab, Zig, Gojek, Tada)
Buses complement the rail system and bring commuters everywhere. Information on public buses can be found here. The airport and most major attractions in Singapore are accessible by the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT). Trains are clean, safe and arrive frequently. Many MRT stops offer sheltered access to malls, which is convenient when it rains. Eating, drinking (including water) or smoking is prohibited on trains and in MRT stations.

Weather

Singapore has a hot and humid equatorial climate all year round, with no distinct seasons.

Temperature:

  • Daytime: 30°C to 34°C (86°F to 93°F)
  • Night: 25°C to 27°C (77°F to 81°F)

Humidity:

  • High — typically around 70% to 90%

Sunlight:

  • Generally sunny in the mornings, with occasional thunderstorms later in the day

Rainfall:

  • Frequent short but heavy showers, especially in the afternoons
  • Two wetter periods:
    • November to January (Northeast Monsoon)
    • April to May (Inter-monsoon season)

Currency

The currency used in Singapore is the Singapore Dollar (S$). Money changing services can be conveniently found at the Singapore Changi Airport as well as most shopping centres and hotels here.

Tax Refund Scheme

Laws in Singapore

Important laws in Singapore you should be aware of:

No Littering or Spitting

  • Fines apply for littering, including small items like tissue, receipts, or gum
  • Spitting in public is also an offense

No Chewing Gum Import

  • Importing or selling chewing gum is illegal (except for therapeutic purposes)

No Smoking in Public Areas

  • Smoking is only allowed in designated smoking areas
  • Prohibited in malls, public transport, parks, restaurants, and even some hotel balconies

Jaywalking Is Illegal

  • Always use pedestrian crossings or overhead bridges
  • Jaywalking (crossing roads outside of designated areas) can result in a fine

Drug Laws Are Extremely Strict

  • Zero tolerance for drug use or trafficking
  • Even traces of drugs in your system (from usage abroad) can be considered an offense

Vandalism Is a Serious Crime

  • Acts like graffiti or damaging property are treated very seriously
  • Offenders may face fines, jail time, or even caning

Alcohol Restrictions

  • No drinking in public places between 10:30 PM and 7:00 AM (under the Liquor Control Act)
  • Alcohol is still allowed at licensed venues during permitted hours
